Thelma's Place has an innovative and creative Adult Day Program, called Minders Keepers, for people with memory loss including Alzheimer's disease and other dementia. The program meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-2PM and the day is full of fun, mentally and physically stimulating exercises.
One of the most exciting new programs offered at Thelma's Place is the "Use it or Lose it" Memory Enhancement. The program was developed using the nationally recognized techniques created by Dr. Rob Winningham, a psychology professor at Western State University in Monmouth, Oregon. The classes will be facilitated by a Certified Geriatric Wellness Instructor trained by Dr. Winningham.
The Memory Enhancement classes are a specialized brain training program for people who are experiencing memory loss or who are interested in improving their memory. The intent is to provide not only intellectually interesting activities but to also provide targeted exercises to help encourage the brain to build neuronal pathways to help maintain and build intellectual and cognitive functions.
During the 7-week Memory Enhancement classes the mind will be exercised and strengthened through the use of clinically tested and scientifically supported interventions. Participants will:
Exercise different parts of their brain
Improve their ability to make new memories
Learn how improving concentration can minimize falls
Make new brain connections
Engage in fun and challenging cognitive activities
Although no guarantee is made to prevent Alzheimer's or other dementia, Dr. Winningham's 16 years of research has shown that by adopting the program he discusses in his book, TRAIN YOUR BRAIN which was released in 2010, people can definitely improve their memory and have a better quality of life as they age.
Classes are held monthly and for more information please call Cathy Parkinson at 503-351-9775.
